The term leadership is over used and under developed in today’s business climate. Leadership is an important element in building teams, delivering desired results and executing a corporate culture conducive to productivity and development. Everyone must understand that there are two types of people in the corporate world today, leaders and followers. It is critical for success in the Loss Prevention industry to ensure that you are a leader. Not just by words or terms, but by actions and execution.
The scope of advancement becomes scarce at the top of any corporate or industry pyramid. As a link in the food chain, it is important that you enhance your leadership ability by vigorously developing your leadership skills. There are three basic ways to accomplish this.
The first is to augment your leadership skills through education and training. This includes reading key leadership books, attending leadership seminars and participating in a leadership coarse. Self-directed leadership development will give you a baseline and foundation that will allow you to develop your skills further. HotLPJobs.com (www.hotlpjobs.com) provides tons of articles, books, and information sections to develop leadership skills and establish the leadership foundation.
The second way is to build a trusting relationship with a mentor. Every successful leader in the business world has had a mentor. The value or a mentor cannot be under-estimated. A mentor can act as an advisor and provide you with invaluable information. A mentor can assist you in developing your leadership skills and provide you with candid feedback that will ultimately assist you in becoming a great leader.
The third basic way is to practice what you learn, weather it is a mentor, a seminar or book. You need to exercise what you have learned to continue to redefine and develop skills that you learn through the two previous methods. As you perform these skills, you will need to refine them to work for you. Copying success is not always good enough and what works for one leader as far as style may not work for you. You cannot afford to be afraid of changing up what you know and apply it in a way that works for you.
It does not matter if you are on the bottom of the pyramid or near the top; you need to set yourself apart from the rest of your peers. Being a proven leader is the best way to accomplish this. It is easy to state that we are leaders but it is much harder to prove it.
